I hate to say it but its not going to happen, even with 10 million signatures.
The European law says no military arms to civilians, so they're using that as a poor but convenient excuse.
CMP has been touted as a possible way to get them here, but they're prohibited from buying foreign guns. They can repatriate US-made ones from overseas, but thats all.
Its a shame & a terrible deal, but its a done deal I'm afraid. Just like leaving the E.U. they'll ignore everyone & do whatever they want.

A shame these will be destroyed. Whether they stayed in the E.U or not won't make any difference. The U.S. is unique in that it was created out of a disdain for tyranny as opposed to a compromise with it. Long live our 2nd amendment. Not ignoring the constant attack it is under.

I was just using Briexit as an example of them doing what they want, not what the people want them to do.

Surely "they" are doing exactly what the majority of "the people" want, after all there was a referendum which gave a "leave the EU" result and that is what the Government is (finally) doing

That would be true if it was the same government, which it isn't.
Wasn't there one of those pesky election thingys involved?
How many times did they stall prevaricate delay & whine instead of leaving as the referendum wanted?
Abstract

The outcome of the 2019 general election—a resounding Conservative majority and an unprecedented defeat for Labour—delivered a decisive electoral verdict for the first time in recent years following a period where British politics has been characterised by instability and indecision. In this article, we draw on aggregate‐level data to conduct an initial exploration of the vote. What was the impact of Brexit on the 2019 general election result? How far has Brexit reshaped electoral politics? Was 2019 a ‘realignment election’? And, if so, what are the implications? With a focus on England and Wales we show that, although the Conservatives made gains deep into Labour’s working class heartlands, these gains have been a long time coming, reflected in Labour’s weakening relationship with working class Britain. As such, 2019 is not a critical election but a continuation of longer‐term trends of dealignment and realignment in British politics.

Yup it was a Minority Conservative led by a 'remainer', every discussion / vote was thwarted by the majority opposition parties and the few 'remainers' in the Conservative party.
The last general election gave a thumping great majority to the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister (who had been going all out to remain) was replaced by a PM who vowed to action what the population voted for.

Anyway - enough of Politics, back to a Lee Enfield

Why couldn’t an importer go in and buy them?

Many (most) countries have signed up to the UN Protocol which states that (Ex) Military weapons can only be sold to Governments and not civilians.
