Its possible. there should be firm contact at the bottom center of the muzzle pad. 5~7 Lbs of pressure is quoted a lot. I'd reassemble carefully & see if the barrel sits BDC but can be pulled free with that much pressure. (A fisherma's scale or trigger pull gauge works well for this). If it passes that test I'd fire it a little & see how its responding.

The only thing to do now is to test fire this rifle and see what happens. If nothing else I learned a little about how SMLE barrels are bedded now!

Thank you Tommy for all your advice!

If its not set right we can start looking at other bedding options/tests.
Did you shim the rear face to receiver fit, like we discussed, when re assembling?

I did not put any shims in, didn’t seem like it needed any in the receiver.

When the barrel is checked for the 5-7 pounds of pressure by pushing up under the front sight base is there a test like this for windage also? Not sure if it needs to be pushed right or left and it is supposed to settle back in the middle of the pad.

It should "wiggle side to side" but only AFTER it's lifted from BDC with the 5~7 Lbs. When released it should drop back to BDC again.

Mine seems to wiggle a little without lifting. I thought it was fine before putting it back together and now that it is back together there still seems to be an issue of some kind. Very frustrating! There did not seem to be a problem at the receiver pad after I sanded a little bit there, no wax was showing from my wax pencil.

Did you shim the rear of the forestock?

Negative on the shim, it did not seem to be loose at the receiver pad. Not sure if this is where you mean or not. I was hoping to avoid any shims, I would not think a rifle that was never used needs to have anything like that done to it since it has not been beat around in the field.

No I meant way, way back where the fore stock contacted the receiver ring. This forces the draws into contact which will (or may) tilt the receiver & barrel slightly. Obviously this will change the barrel's position within the barrel channel, possibly to your advantage.

I will have to take the stock off again and check. I pushed a little on the muzzle and the barrel doesn’t move much, but it almost feels like it is binding a little in the center of the foreshock.

Right about where the reinforcing rib is? That's common it usually means the hadnguards are contacting the barrel forcing it down. Do the crayon test & remove as needed.

Correct, right about where the band is with the sling swivel. I will have to check it, but it did not seem like a problem when I slid a dollar bill under the barrel previously.

But when you tested it with bill, there were no handguards pressing down (touching) on the barrel, once the handgurd is re-fitted the whole barrel harmonics change.

I checked the barrel last night an no wax rubbed off in the middle like I thought it would. I sanded a tiny bit at the muzzle pad and put it all back together, seems a little better. I will leave it as is and test fire and see what happens.

Thank you for all the advice, I hope I improved things!
