This target is from my M1867 French Chassepot long rifle and my latest attempt at paper cartridge making. My first attempt at the cartridges resulted in only about 60% of the rounds detonating. I changed my method of compressing the Pyrodex and today I was 100%! The chamber stayed pretty clean and I didn't brush between any of the shots.
The target was shot at 50 yds. My point of aim was the "5" in the midsection and the first round is the one located in the right forearm. The others seemed to go pretty much in the same general location, a bit high and a bit left. The charge was 75 gn Pyrodex with a 5cc Lee dipper of 3f BP around the primer cap.

Would you change your hold or your charge to correct the elevation?

Good enough to take a Deer in these woods for sure.

I've never had much luck with Pyrodex. I am sure you'd have better results with good old Black Powder.

Quite a feat making your own ammo for this old warhorse.

Paper cartridge. I'm impressed. Well done. Look forward to more reports about this old guy. The rifle I mean. :geek:

Are you nitrating the paper?

Combustible paper is not very efficient, unless it burns without leaving fouling on the chamber wall.

The original cartridge was designed to have the remnant of the paper tube pulled out of the barrel by the bullet and attached string.

While living in upper ME,combustable/potassium nitrate was no where to be found (precomputer days) I derived my potassium nitrate by dripping hot water over some black powder in a coffee filter and let the liquid dry over night and "crystalize" if you will. I used 2LB linen stationary for paper. I added just a few tablespoons of water to dissolve and then let the linen paper soak up the liqiud as well as the light cotton string. Then I continued my cartridge making procces (think I had a template,a dowel and a piano wire to crimp the base before tying the string) The cartridges were sturdy and I never had paper residue in the chamber. Perhaps I dissolved some sulfur as well during the postassium nitrate making precess? but i never had and paper residue out of the five batches of 20 I made...Larry
