A three shot Berthier mousqueton model 1892 with its original barrel and sights, the walnut stock is showing battle damage repairs typical of French arsenal circa WWI. It's a good find!

The wood repair at the rear of the receiver with the vertical dowells is typical of the early Mousquetons lacking a recoil lug, hence the horizontal crack.

It's N marked on the receiver/barrel then you could shot milsurp 1932N cartridges in it, or any of the newly made ammo.

It's quite lively to shoot with the 1932N ammo, (buttstock firmely pressed to shoulder).

Thanks for the info kelt!I have a few other questions that maybe you can help me with.

Is it normal for these carbines to have a hole drilled into the buttstock under the buttplate?I disassembled the rifle to clean the cosmo out of it and under the buttplate is a hole that goes pretty deep into the stock that looks like it could be used to store cleaning equipment.

Is the sling on my rifle original? It looks like the ones Ive seen in photos but its missing the button and the flap the covers it.

Since the rifle has the cleaning rod slot filled, stacking hook added, and is N marked it was apparently around for the 1927 rebuild program so why does it still retain the 3 shot magazine?

Is it normal for these carbines to have a hole drilled into the buttstock under the buttplate ? ... Yes it is normal, this was were it was held in the lathe or stock replicating machine when the stock was made. These were not used to store anything in it, the cleaning kit was carried in the soldiers backpack.
Is the sling on my rifle original ? ...It is hard to tell if your sling is an original, need better picures of it.
Since the rifle has the cleaning rod slot filled, stacking hook added, and is N marked it was apparently around for the 1927 rebuild program so why does it still retain the 3 shot magazine ? ... There were still some French units that still used the 3 round charger system after WWI up to the end of WWII such as the Légion Étrangère Artillery Crews.

Your sling is an original but should have the the button and the flap the covers it.

Well I shot the carbine yesterday with my last few rounds of 8mm Lebel and it actually shot pretty well.I ended up with 2 dud rounds out of the 6 I fired which caused quite a mess in the action (powder was a burnt solid mass after firing and lodged the bullet just ahead of the chamber) but other than that the rifle worked great and I had no trouble knocking over paint cans at 50 yards. Now I just need to get some reloading dies and start making some ammo.
