Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Numbered Parts

I'm going to do a complete takedown of my M1 over the next few days as it's due for a good cleaning and oiling/greasing. I bought the gun about 10 years ago and I suspect it originally came as a lower grade CMP gun. Since it's apart, I'd like to document all the numbered parts and see how mis-matche...

M1 Garand Loading Question

I purchased an M1 Garand about 10 years ago from a local gunshop who had it on consignment. It is a 1945 SA rifle with a slightly pitted bore...but overall a good shooter. I have always suspected it was a lower grade CMP rifle. I have enjoyed shooting it immensely since I purchased it and it is one ...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

I will definitely sit down and compare them. I have noticed that the German's loved their serial numbers. I have a mismatched P08 Luger pistol that I bought as a shooter (specifically looked for a mismatched gun for that purpose). It is built from two different guns. It's amazing how many parts are ...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

CamaroDMD, Please if you get time in the future, no rush, please snap some reference photos- close ups of the receiver marks, the wood finish, the bolt, and the restamped serial number fonts on that collector grade Mitchell and a few pictures of the other details like the blue, the box, the certifi...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

You most likely got it clean ok, but do not forget the bolt. I would take it down clean and oil it, then grease a wee bit on the channels and bolt. No grease on the bolt face or chamber. bolt take down instructions if you forgot. http://www.surplusfirearm.com/2012/07/14/mauser-bolt-disassembly-reas...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the books. Always want to find good resources. I scrubbed the barrel down with a .30 cal brass brush using Hoppes and it looks pretty good. I see just a tiny bit of surface pitting but not much. I think it will be fine. Just annoyed. I was a little surpri...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

I really appreciate all the good advice. Lots of good and helpful information. The more I think about, the more you are right...what I have is what I want. A nice condition functional Mauser that isn't too valuable to shoot. I feel like I may have allowed myself to get down on the fact that "true co...

Re: Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

Hmm...maybe you guys are right. Maybe I should give the Mitchell another chance. The stock does bother me. But, I can't imagine it would be that hard to refinish. The rifle has a chromed (or otherwise highly polished) bolt...which doesn't look right to me. If memory serves, the bolt should be silver...

Want to Find the Right Karabiner 98k

I have always loved the old Mauser rifles. I love the history behind them and I have always wanted a decent one of my own. When I was a kid, I hunted with a Sporterized 1938 Mauser with the 243 Mauser AG Borsigwalde receiver stamp. It had belonged to my grandfather and had been converted to shoot 30...
