Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I checked the barrel last night an no wax rubbed off in the middle like I thought it would. I sanded a tiny bit at the muzzle pad and put it all back together, seems a little better. I will leave it as is and test fire and see what happens.

Thank you for all the advice, I hope I improved things!

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

Correct, right about where the band is with the sling swivel. I will have to check it, but it did not seem like a problem when I slid a dollar bill under the barrel previously.

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I will have to take the stock off again and check. I pushed a little on the muzzle and the barrel doesn’t move much, but it almost feels like it is binding a little in the center of the foreshock.

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

Negative on the shim, it did not seem to be loose at the receiver pad. Not sure if this is where you mean or not. I was hoping to avoid any shims, I would not think a rifle that was never used needs to have anything like that done to it since it has not been beat around in the field.

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

Mine seems to wiggle a little without lifting. I thought it was fine before putting it back together and now that it is back together there still seems to be an issue of some kind. Very frustrating! There did not seem to be a problem at the receiver pad after I sanded a little bit there, no wax was ...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I did not put any shims in, didn’t seem like it needed any in the receiver. When the barrel is checked for the 5-7 pounds of pressure by pushing up under the front sight base is there a test like this for windage also? Not sure if it needs to be pushed right or left and it is supposed to settle back...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

The only thing to do now is to test fire this rifle and see what happens. If nothing else I learned a little about how SMLE barrels are bedded now!

Thank you Tommy for all your advice!

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

The wax pencil is a good idea and it helped me, not sure why I didn’t think of that. I didn’t have to sand too much where the receiver pad is. More from the muzzle pad, it would wobble when I would gently push on the end of the barrel. I just about have that taken care of, like there were two high p...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I have did a little sanding in this area and it has not seemed to made a difference. I am only doing a little at a time and when I screw the trigger guard in the barrel looks like it keeps going where it originally was at the muzzle pad. I even smoothed that area a little also. I was hoping to see a...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I took the stock back off tonight and am wondering if anything may be off where the rear barrel pad is. Should the wood be flush at the tip of where the probe is pointing with that oval cut out of the wood? Not sure if this could be a problem area that could be throwing the muzzle off like I asked a...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I started putting the rifle back together today and I can slide a dollar bill under the barrel with no problems. One thing I noticed towards the muzzle where the end band is, the tiny gap between the barrel and stock is not quite even on both sides. The screwdriver tip in the photo will not fit from...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

If I end up needing to move the front sight base over, how is it done? I read about removing the pins and hitting on a piece of wood to move it forward. I was under the impression it may turn a little in order to get it straight on the barrel.

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

I checked the Draws area and it appears the distance in that slot may be off by 1 mm on the left side (towards butt stock) when I measure it. Would this be enough to affect my front sight being off? Seems very minuscule to me. The stock takes a little effort to slide off the receiver there, not sure...

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

When I removed the stock it was not very easy to get it to slide off the receiver in the Draws area. I will look at this again and see before I put it all back together again.

Thank you for the visuals and info!

Re: SMLE Front Sight Question

After removing the front sight guard I got to looking at the sight base and I am not sure if it may be cocked over slightly. I did this unscientifically by roughly aligning the rear peep hole with the front sight while looking from the muzzle end. I thought it may need to rotate slightly to the righ...
