Well, the board is either fixed, or it's going to run terribly. Cross your fingers and hope for the best. I'm at my technical limit right now.

Re: G43 sporter stock without recoil lug hole??

A large part of recoil is the rocket engine effect from the high pressure gas (6,000 to 15,000 psi) exiting the muzzle after the bullet leaves.

Re: SOME THOUGHTS ON ACCURACY & OTHERS

Once someone picks the rifle up off the bench and shoots from a "field" position, that minute-of-angle rifle may not even stay on the paper.
Under those conditions, most won't see the difference between a tack driver and one that shoots 4 inch groups at 100 yards.

Re: Good M1 video

That video pretty much dispelled all the so-called flaws associated with the M1. The "enemy hearing the ping" being the most absurd. With all the racket of rifles being fired the enemy won't hear it. This was verified by interviews of German soldiers after the war. It is a good signal to the shooter...

Re: A very cool rifle I'd like to know more about!

It looks like a cut down and sporterized Swiss G11 rifle. Might be a cut down Swiss M1889 also, but G11 rifle is more likely.

Re: A "kluge" but it worked

Remembering that the cartridges fed OK from the right side, and I'm using an "03A3 straight grip stock (not necessarily the most precise fit) I thought the magazine box might be misaligned a bit. I removed the magazine assembly and built up the inside of the stock with masking tape (six layers) to s...

Re: M1903 only feeds from the right side of the magazine

Worth trying the follower. I need to add that the problem is with 220gr round-nose loads. M2 ball feeds just fine. The M2 tip enters the chamber just before the cartridge reaches the point when it wants to veer out of alignment. The lead tip on the round nose hits the edge of the chamber and hangs u...

M1903 only feeds from the right side of the magazine

Cartridges from the left side of the magazine get angled too far to the right and do not enter the chamber. The ones on the right side have no problems. We may be somewhat of a right-sided family but the rifle needs to feed all rounds from the magazine.
Any idea where to start looking to fix this?

Re: Survival Situation

My CMP Special is actually about a pound less than the other Garands I've weighed. I live in a repressive "ten rounds only" leftist state, so i's now my SHTF rifle. Note that a proficient person can reload it faster than replacing an "evil" box magazine, so I don't feel too handicapped. The 30-06 wi...

Re: CMP Special Grade

That's not how the web sling is installed per the military. I hate the "rattleclank" clip and in normal use keep the sling tight on the rifle. When I need my hands free I'll open up the slack. I carry it loaded in both hands, ready for a snap shot, after sudden close-in charges by moose and bear.

Re: CMP Special Grade - Pictures

Here it is. The gas cylinder looks lighter from the bright sun on it.
The red stuff under the op rod is GREASE. On first assembly I use some extra.
I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic.
The excess gets wiped off after I've used it a bit and the grease is worked in.

Re: CMP Special Grade

Right now it's disassembled. The wood is getting treated with raw linseed oil (this takes weeks) and is already a lot darker. Each metal component will be covered with grease inside out (except where oil is the proper lube) as the rifle get reassembled. Many years ago I worked on a malfunctioning (c...

Re: GEW 98 long rifle at 500 and 800 yards*

I believe the WWI 8x57mm S load ran a 150 grain flat base spitzer at around 2900 fps from the Gew 98 with the long barrel. I've probably done that with pretty moderate pressures using WW760 and 150gr softpoints.
